Bibi Tanga

Origin: Bangui, Central African Republic
Website: www.myspace.com/bibitanga

"I feel like there's this heritage of black music from around the world, and I'm the heir to it." So speaks, Billy Tanga, whose acclaimed art-damaged rock bridges jazz, gospel, funk, punk, and Afro-beat. Bibi was raised in Paris, France after his family emigrated from Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic. Due to his father's position as a diplomat, Bibi's family would often shuttle between Bangui and Paris. Growing up between two different continents, Bibi listened to a wide range of music. Bibi began writing songs, equally inspired by Curtis Mayfield and James Brown, as well as Fela Kuti from Nigeria and Bembeya Jazz from Guinea. Those influences can be found on Bibi’s first album, Le Vent Qui Souffle, released in 2000 on the Hipi Music label. On Bibi's most recent album, Yellow Guaze, Bibi introduces his music to a whole new audience with songs like "Ayo" - sung in Sango, the language of the Central African Republic.
